Episode Summary

The episode starts with a slow motion Matrix-style opening sequence with the lab being attacked. You see Dr. Robbins has tripped an assailant. One assailant is shot and two periphery lab techs are shot. Hodges is protecting Wendy. Catherine is helping another tech, and Nick and (surprise) Sara are shooting at the assailants. The episode then jumps back 48 hours.

Eckley tells Ray he's promoted to CSI 2. The shift is understaffed because Riley quit. Catherine, Greg, Nick and Ray then meet brass at an auto accident. Rising starlet Olivia Hamilton is dead in her convertible. The SUV that hit her contains a drunk who surprisingly has survived. He is immediately taken to the hospital. Ray notes the tire tracks which prove that the SUV did not immediately stop when they hit Olivia's car. At the autopsy, Dr. Robbins tells Catherine that Olivia was 8 weeks pregnant.

Greg is sent out to a hotel murder (to his protest). The victim is an older man who has been beat to death. He's been dead for approximately 2 days.

Brass interviews Olivia's boyfriend, Denny Ocampo. He's the son of a wealthy casino owner and is joined by his bodyguard Tom O'Neill (a slick talking suit). Denny denies involvement. Brass then interviews the drunk, Richard Wilkes, who mutters something about Olivia. Meanwhile, Ray and Nick discover a stalker scrapbook, duct tape, a knife and other items in Wilkes' trunk which point to him planning on kidnapping Olivia. He immediately becomes the prime suspect...however, they aren't sure whether he intended to kill her in the car crash. (During the scene Ray also gets a letter from internal affairs that clear him for killing the murderer in last season's finale).

Denny Ocampo comes back to identify Olivia, along with Tom. Hodges accidentally leaks to Tom that Wilkes is a suspect. The next day, the tabloid headlines read that Olivia's killer confesses. Ecklie rakes Catherine over the coals and tells her that Riley's exit interview may have been right about her. After the confrontation Sara shows up. Ecklie contacted her for recommendations for the empty spot and she decided to come help out. She tells the team that Grissom is lecturing at the Sorbonne and they are waiting for their research grant to be approved. Later, Sara gives Catherine advice about running the team and suggests that Grissom was so successful because he had Catherine as an assistant.

Ray visits David Wilkes and does an exam to look for bruising. His neck had been snapped, which they had blamed on whiplash from the crash, but he has bruises on his body which indicates he had been wearing a seat belt (which he wasn't at the accident). They determine the body had been moved. Later he and Nick discover through traffic cameras that the traffic light had been tampered with, causing Olivia to stop her car and be in prime position to get hit by the SUV. Now they just have to figure out who was driving the SUV.

The follow Wilkes' path to discover that he and Tom O'Neill had a confrontation about three hours before the crash. They suspect O'Neill but don't know why he wouldn't have scratches from the air bag. With a warrant for his hotel suite, they find a motorcycle helmet with air bag residue. Unfortunately, it's very common and they can't trace it to the SUV.

The lab is attacked in real time and a body is stolen. It's not Olivia's body, as previously suspected, but it's the bum from Greg's case. DNA shows that the bum was Olivia's father. Nick and Sara respond to a call where a body has been put through the wood chipper. They search through the parts back at the lab to find something to link O'Neill to Olivia's father. They find a cuff link with O'Neill's signature logo and the case is closed...at least for one of the deaths. They don't have enough evidence to get O'Neill on Olivia's death...but at least they caught the bad guy!

I can't believe that all that time there was a tarantula lost in that lab somewhere.

If someone told me that they lost one, you would not find me anywhere near that place.
